EU leader aims for a principled trade agreement with the US by the 9th

‘Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that the goal is to reach a principled agreement with the United States by the 9th, the deadline for US-EU tariff negotiations.

In a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen held in Aarhus, Denmark, von der Leyen was asked whether a political agreement would be reached before the 9th and further details negotiated afterward. She responded affirmatively.

She emphasized that the trade volume between the EU and the United States is the largest in the world and explained that it is impossible to negotiate details within the 90-day negotiation deadline.

Additionally, while the EU is prepared to reach an agreement and desires a resolution through negotiations, von der Leyen noted that they are prepared for all scenarios if a satisfactory agreement is not reached, indicating that all options are on the table.

Maroš Šefčovič, EU Vice-President for Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight, is set to meet with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Krein and Jamie McGreer, representative of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), in Washington D.C.

This meeting is expected to be the last high-level face-to-face negotiation before the deadline.

The EU is reportedly requesting the U.S. to agree on a broad framework before the deadline, where the 10% tariff remains but tariffs on specific items like automobiles and steel are reduced or exempted, similar to an agreement reached between the UK and the U.S.
