“Unauthorized Use of Articles for AI Training”… The Three Major Terrestrial Broadcasters File Copyright Lawsuit Against Naver

The three major terrestrial broadcasters, KBS, MBC, and SBS, have filed a copyright lawsuit against Naver, claiming that Naver improperly used their news data for generative AI training. The Korea Broadcasters Association announced on the 14th that the public broadcasters have sued Naver for copyright infringement and violation of the Unfair Competition Prevention Act by using their articles without permission for training “HyperClova” and “HyperClova X.”

The association, which includes 39 terrestrial broadcasters as members, had previously sent a statement in December 2023 to Naver, Kakao, Google Korea, and other domestic and international IT companies, indicating that separate compensation agreements are necessary for using news content in AI training and that unauthorized use is prohibited.

They also reported that despite requesting compensation for the use of broadcast news data and measures to prevent future infringements from Naver on two occasions, they had not received a clear response.

A representative from the Korea Broadcasters Association AI Task Force (TF), which is composed mainly of the member companies’ legal teams and intellectual property departments, stated, “We will start with Naver and sequentially file lawsuits against big tech companies that used news data without permission to respond vigorously.”
