LG Uplus announced on the 16th that it would conduct a pilot operation of autonomous street cleaning vehicles on Jeju Island. This initiative is part of Jeju Island’s “Resident-Centric Autonomous Driving Pilot Project,” and it will take place twice daily across the New Jeju region (12 km) and the Advanced Zone (4.8 km). The project utilizes a single autonomous street cleaning vehicle, modified from an electric truck, equipped with autonomous driving sensors (LiDAR, cameras, radar), real-time communication modules, and road suction and water spraying devices. The vehicle operates at speeds below 10 km/h to clean and suction dust, leaves, and trash from the road.
A self-driving technology startup, RideFlux, manages the operation, while LG Uplus provides communication infrastructure and remote control platforms for the autonomous vehicles. The application of LG Uplus’s “curb recognition technology” enhances urban driving stability and cleaning efficiency.
Through this pilot operation, Jeju Island aims to maintain the cleanliness of major city roads, which see a lot of foot traffic, thereby realizing the goal of a “clean city Jeju” using smart technology.
Kim Soo-kyung, Vice President of LG Uplus’s Western Corporate Client Division, stated, “Autonomous driving technology is expanding beyond convenience in transportation to areas that enhance city safety and cleanliness,” and added, “LG Uplus will support the establishment of Jeju’s autonomous driving ecosystem based on communication and control platforms and expand smart environmental management solutions nationwide.”
