“Neutrino Physicists from Around the World Gather at IBS to Shape the Future”

The 1st IBS-INFN Workshop and the 2nd Yemilab Workshop are being held, with global scientists gathering in Korea to lead the future of neutrino physics. The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Underground Experiment Research Group and Italy’s National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) will host these events from the 18th for three days at the IBS Science Culture Center in Daejeon.

Since signing their first partnership agreement in 2014, both institutions have collaborated extensively across physics fields, including neutrino measurements and dark matter exploration. As this is the first joint workshop centered on IBS’s underground facility, Yemilab, and INFN’s prominent underground lab Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), a tour session to explore Yemilab in Jeongseon will be conducted on the final day.

The workshop will focus on sharing the latest research in neutrino physics, discussing the direction of inert neutrino research, and developing key technologies. Notably, Dr. Aldo Ianni, the LNGS research manager, will attend and present on “Borexino Physics and Beyond.” Additionally, 11 distinguished scholars from home and abroad will participate as speakers to specifically discuss future joint research projects. This event is recognized as a significant opportunity to strengthen Korean-Italian cooperation in neutrino research and dark matter exploration, aiming to achieve global milestones.

Professor Won Eun-il of Korea University, co-chairing the event, stated, “We’ve prepared a platform for discussing research trends, core technologies in neutrino physics, and proposing new collaboration models.” Lee Hyun-soo, deputy director of the IBS Underground Experiment Research Group, expressed hopes that “this workshop will expand collaborative research centered around Yemilab and LNGS, achieve scientific advancements, and further strengthen the cooperative relationship between IBS and INFN.”
