Korea-EU Cooperation to Create an Artificial Sun

1st Korea-EU Fusion Demonstration Reactor Workshop Held to Discuss Core Technology Cooperation

Korea and the European Union (EU) are set to share and cooperate on core fusion technologies essential for building an artificial sun on Earth. The two parties will discuss additional fields for collaboration in the research and development (R&D) of fusion demonstration reactors.

The Korea Institute of Fusion Energy announced on the 24th that the “1st Korea-EU Fusion Demonstration Reactor Workshop” would be held on the 25th and 26th at the institute’s premises. This workshop follows the “7th Korea-EU Fusion Cooperation Meeting” held in January 2024 and is aimed at sharing the current status of fusion demonstration reactor technology development and concretizing collaboration plans between the two regions.

The workshop will involve over 20 members of the Korean side, including Oh Young-guk, President of the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy, Vice President Yoon Si-woo, Kim Woong-chae, Head of the Fusion Engineering Technology Division, as well as experts from Korea’s fusion industry, academia, and research community, and Lee Kyung-soo, CEO of Korea’s first fusion startup, Ena-ableFusion (EnF).

On the European side, representatives include David Maisonni, Head of International Cooperation at EURATOM, the EU’s atomic energy community, and Joël Eelbode-Wujan, Head of the Innovative Fusion Demonstration Reactor Division of EUROfusion, the EU’s fusion consortium, with some delegates participating via video conference.

The workshop will explore potential cooperation in various areas, including the R&D status of fusion demonstration reactors, breeding blankets, fuel cycles, divertors, materials, safety and licensing, and high-temperature superconducting magnets. Discussions will also be held to identify additional cooperation areas needed in the development process of fusion demonstration reactors.

Oh Young-guk stated, “The importance of international cooperation is growing as we tackle the challenging task of realizing fusion energy,” adding, “We will strive to strengthen the Korea-EU fusion cooperation relationship through this workshop and generate tangible outcomes.”
