Kim Young-sik, former member of the National Assembly, appointed as the new chairman of the National Research Council of Science and Technology.

“The National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST) announced on the 1st that Young-Sik Kim, an emeritus professor at Kumoh National Institute of Technology, has been appointed as the fifth chairperson of NST. The term of the newly appointed chairperson Kim will begin on the 4th and last for three years.

Chairperson Kim earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Yeungnam University in 1982, a master’s degree in applied mechanics from the same university in 1985, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa in 1988, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Penn State University in 1996.

He began his career as a senior researcher at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in 1993 and served as a professor at Kumoh National Institute of Technology from 1994 to 2020. He also held the position of president of the Korea Technology Business Foundation from 2009 to 2011, served as the 6th president of Kumoh National Institute of Technology from 2013 to 2017, and served as the 21st National Assembly member responsible for the Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee from 2020 to 2024.

NST was established in 2014 under the ‘Act on the Establishment, Operation, and Fostering of Government-Funded Research Institutes in the Field of Science and Technology.’ It supports and fosters 23 government-funded research institutes under the purview of the science and technology sector.”
