OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is making a significant move into the search market. Currently, Google dominates about 90% of the global search market, while Microsoft’s Bing holds approximately 3%. In the US, an AI-based conversational search platform called ‘Perplexity’ is rapidly gaining traction as a competitor to Google. In South Korea, Naver leads with a 60% market share, indicating intensifying competition with these services.
OpenAI announced on the 31st (local time) that it will officially launch a search feature within ChatGPT, previously tested under the name SearchGPT since last July. With this service, OpenAI seeks to capture the market by providing accurate answers through conversational queries.
Using SearchGPT, information that previously required search engines can now be easily accessed through a natural language interface with ChatGPT. ChatGPT automatically searches the web in response to user queries, and users can directly engage the search function by clicking the web search icon.
OpenAI stated, “Better answers can be obtained through natural conversational questions,” adding, “By asking follow-up questions, ChatGPT considers the full context of the conversation to provide the best answers.”
ChatGPT search, based on real-time web searches and partnerships with news and data providers, offers users desired information along with the latest sports updates, stock prices, news, weather, and more.
A “source” button appears below answers, which, when clicked, shows the materials referenced in the response for further exploration. Previously, OpenAI partnered with news agencies like AP, Reuters, Financial Times, News Corporation, Le Monde, Time, Vox Media, and more to facilitate this feature.
OpenAI conveyed that “ChatGPT search emphasizes and attributes information from trusted news sources, benefiting users while expanding the reach of premium journalism produced by publishers like us.”
The search feature is accessible on chatgpt.com and available through desktop and mobile apps. Paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, team users, and those on the SearchGPT waiting list can use it starting today, while ChatGPT’s enterprise and educational users will gain access within weeks. Free users will have access within a few months.
