Samsung Electronics is set to unveil its new smartphone, the ‘Galaxy S25 Edge,’ on April 16, aiming to capture the ultra-slim smartphone market ahead of Apple by five months. According to industry sources, the company’s Mobile Experience (MX) division has decided on this disclosure date, with a detailed specification presented via an online unpack event.
The Galaxy S25 Edge can be purchased starting in May, available in light blue, black, and silver. Its initial production run is estimated at around 40,000 units, which is less than 1% of the company’s monthly smartphone output.
This new model will be a strategic addition to Samsung’s Galaxy S series, marking the first time since the launch of the S10 series in 2019 that a fourth model is being added. Unlike past Edge models that featured curved side displays — first seen with the Galaxy S6 in 2015 — the new S25 Edge signifies an entirely different innovation, highlighted by its slim design.
The smartphone is expected to have a thickness of around 6.4mm, significantly thinner than the S25 basic model at 7.2mm and the Ultra at 8.2mm. It will maintain high-quality camera performance with a 200 million-pixel image sensor and a 50 million-pixel wide-angle camera. The device is expected to use the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor as other S25 models, positioning its price between the basic and Ultra models.
Samsung aims to challenge its major rival Apple with the Edge model. Apple is anticipated to launch the ‘iPhone 17 Air,’ another ultra-slim smartphone, in September, which may have a thickness of around 5.5mm. However, its camera specifications could be lower than the S25 Edge, featuring a single 48 million-pixel rear camera.
Bloomberg has noted that Samsung’s move to introduce a new category ahead of Apple represents one of the most daring design changes in years. Samsung has not confirmed the exact release date of the S25 Edge.
In addition to the S25 Edge, Samsung’s MX division is set to expand its lineup of new form factors with the introduction of ‘Project Infinite,’ an extended reality (XR) device. Samsung unveiled an XR device prototype at the Galaxy Unpack 2025 event, with an initial market release expected in the third quarter.
