On the 13th, it was confirmed that President Yoon Suk-yeol submitted a request to the National Assembly for the appointment of a Supreme Court Justice. According to the National Assembly’s bill information system, President Yoon submitted a proposal on the 12th for the appointment of Mayong-ju (55, Judicial Research and Training Institute Class 23) as a Supreme Court Justice. Previously, Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae had recommended Judge Ma to President Yoon as the successor to Justice Kim Sang-hwan, whose term was ending on the 26th of last month.
According to Article 104, Paragraph 2 of the Constitution, Supreme Court Justices are appointed by the President with the consent of the National Assembly following the recommendation of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
President Yoon, after apologizing for the emergency martial law situation on the 7th, had said he would leave matters related to his term and political stability to the party, but has continued to exercise his powers, including personnel appointments. He approved the dismissal of former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, the appointment of Park Sun-young as the Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (at the vice-minister level), and the dismissal of Ryu Hyuk as the Ministry of Justice Inspector General.
Additionally, he approved 21 bills and 21 presidential orders (enforcement decrees) that were passed in a cabinet meeting on the 10th. The timing of President Yoon’s approvals was shortly after a public address indicating he had no intention of resigning voluntarily.
