In an interview on March 12th, former Democratic Party lawmaker Woo Sang-ho discussed the political implications of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s situation and other related matters. Woo referred to President Yoon’s return to his residence after his detention was canceled as “the last picnic of his life.” He anticipated that Yoon would be dismissed and potentially punished for treason even if he’s not detained, suggesting a likelihood of a life sentence with a long incarceration period.
Regarding the possible political outcomes, Woo suggested that an early presidential election could be advantageous for the Democratic Party. He predicted that if the next election framed as a contest between the Democratic candidate and Yoon Suk-yeol, the result would favor the Democrats. Woo argued that as Yoon continues to speak and act, more people, around 60-70%, would prefer to vote for the Democratic candidate.
Woo also commented on the impeachment discussions surrounding Prosecutor General Sim Wu-jeong, opposing impeachment. He emphasized that impeachment should only occur in cases of unconstitutional legal violations and warned against using it as a tool for minor grievances. Woo highlighted the importance of being judicious when considering impeachment proceedings.
He further explained that the delay in the Constitutional Court’s rulings was due to the complex social issues and the number of cases it needed to address. Regarding the impeachment of figures like Choi Jae-hyung, Woo noted that the handling of these cases should also consider criticisms and attacks from the conservative bloc, suggesting a need for a strategic legal approach.
