Today (19th), the People Power Party decided to hold a party membership qualification review committee regarding the membership application of Attorney Kim Gaeri, who served as a representative in the impeachment trial of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.

In a meeting with reporters at the National Assembly today, Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kim Yong-tae stated regarding Attorney Kim’s membership application, “I instructed the Seoul City Party to open the membership qualification review committee, and a decision will probably be made soon,” adding, “As for now, they are in a waiting state for party membership.”

The People Power Party’s charter and regulations stipulate that a membership qualification review committee be established at the central party and city/provincial levels to assess the party membership eligibility of applicants.

Attorney Kim sparked controversy during his defense of former President Yoon in the impeachment trial by stating, “I was enlightened” about the December 3 emergency martial law, and by announcing the creation of a new party, ‘Yoon Again’, after Yoon’s removal from office, though he later retracted it.

Yoon Jae-ok, the general head of the Central Election Committee, responded to questions at a press conference about whether Attorney Kim’s membership application diminishes the significance of former President Yoon’s departure from the party, saying, “I don’t know if there’s a correlation between the president’s departure and Attorney Kim’s membership. I don’t think it diminishes the meaning of Yoon’s departure.”
