The joint response team dispatched by the government to address the recent kidnapping and confinement crimes targeting Koreans arrived in Cambodia on the 15th local time.

At the Techo International Airport in Cambodia, Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Jin-ah stated to the press, “The response team will officially begin its activities locally starting tomorrow,” and added, “We will immediately share additional information as it becomes available.”

Deputy Minister Kim mentioned the case of a woman in her 30s who died near the Vietnam border, stating, “We have requested that the Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities actively investigate the matter moving forward,” and “We plan to collaborate more actively throughout this process.”

In response to a question about whether a chartered flight would be used for repatriating Koreans, she replied, “We are preparing for various methods,” but noted, “Nothing has been finalized yet.”

The response team is working towards arranging meetings with high-level Cambodian officials to prioritize discussions on the plan to repatriate 61 Koreans detained during a local crackdown.

The police plan to bring back to Korea those among the detainees for whom arrest warrants have been issued, but many are reportedly insisting on remaining in Cambodia, casting uncertainty on how quickly they can be repatriated.

The government is also preparing flight arrangements with the goal of repatriating them by this weekend.

Additionally, the response team will urge Cambodian authorities to investigate the ‘Korean university student torture and death case,’ and plans to discuss procedures for autopsy, repatriation of the body, and future joint investigation methods.
