Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, is seen checking his mobile phone during the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, on the morning of the 12th. On March 12, 2025, the Democratic Party announced that it had received a tip-off about an assassination plan against Lee Jae-myung.
Hwang Jung-a, the party spokesperson, met with reporters after the Supreme Council meeting and said, “Recently, we received information about a threat to Lee’s personal safety. Several members received messages stating that a plan was in place to smuggle in a Russian handgun for an assassination attempt.”
She continued, “There have been requests for us to make every effort to protect Lee for the time being. The party is considering requesting security measures for his safety, and actions are expected to be taken soon.”
Lee Jae-myung expressed his thoughts on this threat, stating, “While there may be some thoughtless individuals, I have faith in the wisdom of the Korean people.” However, he refrained from commenting on whether he plans to reduce his public activities or accept the decision of the Constitutional Court.
Regarding the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol, spokesperson Hwang said, “Given the urgent national situation, we are considering holding the Supreme Council meeting at the Gwanghwamun site on Friday (14th).” She added, “The significance of ‘Gwanghwamun’ is to widely spread light, to illuminate the world, and bring peace to the nation, symbolizing the completion of a revolution of light with the removal of President Yoon.”
