“Efforts for Rapid Passage of Bills for Population Strategy Planning Department Formation”
Han Duck-soo, the Prime Minister, noted on the 18th that the population crisis is a national challenge, stating that the government is making all possible policy efforts, while urging for social interest and cooperation.
During a congratulatory speech at the “Happiness of Children” event held at Lotte World Tower in Seoul, Prime Minister Han noted, “The population crisis is the most important national task, and we are doing everything possible in terms of policy efforts.”
Prime Minister Han remarked, “There were times when the low birth rate issue felt like an insurmountable wall, but now we can have a little hope,” adding that “the number of births increased for the first time in 12 years last July, and the number of marriages increased by 32.9% compared to the previous year.” He emphasized, “We believe this is the last golden time and we are doing our utmost.”
He explained, “First, we will create an environment where work and family can coexist,” and stated that through flexible work hours and support for parental leave, people would be enabled to work while caring for their family. Additionally, he mentioned, “We are doing our best to have the state take responsibility for childcare through expanded childcare services and increased support for after-school programs,” further noting efforts to expand housing supply for households with children and alleviate the economic burden on newlyweds.
Prime Minister Han also mentioned the pursuit of establishing the Population Strategy Planning Department, a comprehensive control tower addressing low birth rates, aging, and immigration policies. He committed to working towards the swift passage of pending bills in the National Assembly for the department’s establishment. He concluded by emphasizing, “What’s most important is the interest and cooperation of our society,” stating, “Our children are the future of Korea.”
