Assemblyman Park Jumin from the Democratic Party stated today (15th) that the party is discussing the formation of an impeachment prosecution committee to proceed with the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol.
During an interview on MBC Radio’s “Kim Jong-bae’s Focus,” Assemblyman Park responded to a question about the possibility of forming an impeachment prosecution committee by saying, “It seems like that’s the right way to see it.”
The impeachment prosecution committee acts as the ‘prosecutor’ in the Constitutional Court’s impeachment trial. During the impeachment trial of former President Park Geun-hye in 2016, a committee of nine members, including Gwon Seong-dong, the then-chairman of the Legislative and Judiciary Committee, was formed, comprising lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties.
Assemblyman Park stated, “Although Jeong Cheong-rae, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, would become an impeachment prosecutor, considering Chairman Jeong is not from a legal profession, we are seeking people who can assist.”
He further explained, “Since the Administrative and Defense Committee members are involved, and given that this time also the six opposition parties have jointly pursued impeachment, there is a possibility of including lawmakers from other parties if requested.”
Additionally, regarding legal representatives to pursue the impeachment prosecution, he mentioned, “We are exploring whether there are suitable lawyers available.”
Hwang Woon-ha, the floor leader of the National Innovation Party, also met with reporters at the National Assembly today and responded to a question about forming an impeachment prosecution committee by saying, “We are scheduled to meet with (the Democratic Party) this afternoon.”
