Oh Se-hoon’s Change in Stance? “Support for Impeachment First? Misunderstanding”

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon commented on the delayed constitutional court ruling regarding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, suggesting that the likelihood of dismissal or rejection of the case is gradually increasing, contrary to initial predictions. In an interview on TV Chosun’s News9, Mayor Oh indicated that the prolonged timeline could signal internal disagreements among justices and speculated that two justices might favor rejection and one might favor dismissal, based on the delay and their political inclinations.

Addressing being labeled as part of the “pro-impeachment camp,” Oh clarified that his recommendation for an impeachment motion was aimed at resolving political turmoil and preventing party division, not necessarily implying support for impeachment. He explained that advocating for an impeachment motion under party consensus was meant to achieve legal clarity from the constitutional court rather than expressing explicit support for impeachment.

Regarding potential political repercussions from an alleged association with political broker Myung Tae-gyun, Oh dismissed such speculation as unfounded, noting the lack of substantive evidence and his long-standing clean political record. He emphasized his proactive stance in urging swift investigations to clarify matters.

On the topic of real estate, Oh expressed regret over the consequences of lifting the land transaction permit system (토지거래허가제) in specific areas, which inadvertently contributed to a noticeable rise in property prices. He acknowledged misjudging the market impact and assured continued monitoring and coordination with the government to manage the situation.

Furthermore, Oh reaffirmed his commitment to imposing fines on tents erected near Gwanghwamun by those calling for President Yoon’s impeachment, citing legal principles and criticizing opposition parties for undermining the rule of law.
