Lee Jin-sook, the former chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, who was cut off from the Daegu mayoral nomination process by the People Power Party, shared a post on Facebook titled “Jang Dong-hyuk Out” and remarked, “The train has already left.” This was a response to the previous day’s public request made by Jang Dong-hyuk, the leader of the People Power Party, who asked Lee to run in a by-election for the National Assembly instead of the Daegu mayoral race.
On the 6th, Lee shared a post on Facebook written by former lawmaker Cha Myung-jin, which began with “Jang Dong-hyuk’s campaign against Lee Jin-sook.” In the post, Cha criticized Jang, suggesting, “This person is really unacceptable. He’s telling Lee to run in the by-election now? It’s like proposing to someone who is already married and on their honeymoon. Isn’t it a strategy to invalidate votes for Lee Jin-sook in the Daegu mayoral election?”
Cha further added, “Even with such tactics, Lee Jin-sook’s votes won’t disappear,” and criticized Jang, stating, “I hoped you would do well, but now you’re out.”
Lee echoed these sentiments by sharing Cha’s post and adding, “The train has left…” A couple of minutes later, she posted another comment, seemingly aimed at Jang, saying, “The distance from Daegu to Seoul is 300 km. Is it really that far?”
The day before, Jang had appeared on Maeil Shinmun’s YouTube channel and suggested that while Lee could play a significant role in Daegu, the party also needed a strong fighter in the National Assembly, urging her to choose the latter.
Previously, on the 22nd of the previous month, Lee Jeong-hyun, the former nomination committee chairman of the People Power Party, announced the exclusion of Lee Jin-sook and lawmaker Joo Ho-young from the Daegu mayoral race. In response, Lee indicated her intention to run as an independent candidate, stating she would seek the choice of the Daegu citizens through a citizens’ primary. Now, she is effectively campaigning in Daegu, wearing a white jumper instead of the red one symbolic of the People Power Party.
