Jeong Cheong-rae, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 3rd at the National Assembly’s supreme council meeting that they will strive to ensure the achievements of the APEC and tariff negotiations are communicated to the people, including establishing a special committee for follow-up support. He noted that “the Gyeongju APEC concluded with record achievements.”
Furthermore, Jeong highlighted the practical diplomacy centered on national interest by President Lee Jae-myung as particularly impressive, mentioning reactions from the public, such as describing APEC as “grade A.” He praised the event as a “grand festival of South Korea and a decisive victory for President Lee’s practical diplomacy.”
Additionally, Jeong remarked that reaching a tariff agreement with the United States reduced external uncertainties significantly. Specifically, he noted the “miraculous” development of receiving 260,000 GPUs from Nvidia, which lays the groundwork for becoming one of the top three AI countries, a government goal.
He also pointed out the unexpected success of the U.S. approving the construction of nuclear-powered submarines, which strengthens self-defense and security. Jeong emphasized the importance of restoring relations with China, mentioning discussions between the leaders on sensitive issues and President Xi Jinping’s invitation for President Lee to visit China.
Lastly, addressing the People’s Power Party, Jeong remarked that while they might be surprised by the unexpected achievements, even former President Trump praised President Lee as a leader who excelled in tariff negotiations. He urged them to stop opposing and join in the patriotic efforts.
