“Hwang Woo-yea: Pushing for innovation beyond the level of party reformation… Members and the people are the compass”

“Many discussions needed to go beyond the change of party… Procedure to ask the opinions of elected members and party members will proceed”
“Will harmonize the relationship between party, government, and the general public… Will cooperate with opposition parties as well”

(Seoul=Yonhap News) By Yu-mi Lee and Jo-dan Cho, Yonhap News Agency – Hwang Woo-ye, the newly appointed emergency response committee chairman of the People Power Party, announced on the 3rd that he will push for innovation beyond the level of reestablishment of the party. Hwang said in a press conference held in Yeouido, Seoul, “The opinions of party members and the people will be the compass guiding the emergency committee led by me.”

This emergency committee is evaluated as a ‘practical committee’ that operates the party until the next party convention to elect the leadership, but it has expressed its determination not to limit its role to just ‘managing the party change.’

Hwang said, “I will reform until I become the voice of more people and turn into a party that can embrace more people.” He emphasized, “We will perform the party tasks prescribed by the party constitution and regulations without distinguishing between management and innovation. We will not neglect preparations for the party convention and neglect people’s livelihoods and party innovation.”

He also said, “We will boldly push forward with the welfare policies demanded by the people. We will become a party that actively approaches people’s lives and cooperates with them.”

Along with this, he stated that he will re-establish the identity of the conservative party and engage in cooperation with opposition parties.

Regarding the establishment of the relationship between the party, the government, the presidential office, he stated, “We will harmonize the relationships between the party, the government, and the general public.”

Regarding the selection of members of the emergency committee in the future, he said, “(The scale is) usually 7 to 9 members, which has been our tradition,” and he also mentioned that they will balance age, region, inner and outer circles, gender, etc. Especially, he explained, “We plan to gather people with leadership skills to quickly handle many tasks.”

As for the key issue of the new emergency committee, the amendment of the rules for the next party convention, and the selection of the party leader, Hwang expressed his position, “We will gather all opinions in an open manner and, if they meet the requirements for amending the party constitution and regulations, we will proceed with the process fairly and without bias.”

Regarding the transition to a ‘group leadership system,’ he also said, “The change of party rules or leadership system is not something that happens overnight but is based on many discussions and actual experience. When changing that, we need to go through many discussions. We will proceed with a process of asking for opinions from elected members and party members with pros and cons.”

Hwang also mentioned that he will extend his greetings to the heads of other parties, including the Democratic Party, led by Jae-myung Lee.

Hwang, who served as a New Frontier Party (predecessor of the People Power Party) chairman and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, is a veteran of the party who served as a member of the 15th to 19th National Assembly.

Returning to party affairs after about 8 years, Hwang also shared his personal thoughts.

He said, “Now is not the time to rest, but the time to work, as the difficult times our People Power Party faces encapsulate my entire political life.” He added, “I will do my best to restore the party and regain its glory.”
