Several foreign professors at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST), North Korea’s only international privately funded university, have reportedly returned to the country after leaving due to the COVID-19 pandemic for the first time in four years.
According to Taeyoung Ho, the head of the office of the Minjoo Peace Foundation reunification advisory council, in a conversation with YTN, he heard last month through sources that North Korea issued entry visas, indicating that the issuance of visas was to ensure the safety of the foreign professors.
PUST was established in North Korea in 2010 through a collaboration between South Korean private organizations and North Korean authorities, and it is a specialized international privately funded university in the field of science and technology. The faculty consists mainly of Americans and Europeans, including Korean-Americans, and all classes are conducted in English.
It is virtually the first time that North Korea has issued residency visas to Western nationals after partially opening its borders in the second half of last year. As of now, Western embassies and international organizations have not been able to return to North Korea.
