(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kwak Min-seo – The Democratic Party held a meeting on the 30th for the ‘Task Force for Recovery and Growth on Retirement Age Extension’ to discuss the direction of amending the law to increase the statutory retirement age from the current 60 years.

The task force previously announced plans to introduce a labor-management joint legislation in September, aiming to complete the legislative process by November.

Representatives from both labor and management, such as the Korean Federation of Trade Unions, the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, and the Korea Employers Federation, along with related experts, attended the meeting to share the progress of discussions and outline future plans.

So Byeong-hoon, the chairman of the task force, remarked during the meeting that “retirement age extension is an issue where interests sharply diverge across generations, industries, and job types. While it might be impossible to create a law that satisfies everyone completely, we need to find a solution that all parties can agree upon.”

Kim Ju-young, the secretary, emphasized, “In a reality where opportunities are limited despite having the ability and willingness to work, extending the retirement age is not just a choice but a necessary task.”

Inside and outside the party, there is keen interest in whether discussions concerning retirement age extension will be reflected in Lee Jae-myung’s presidential campaign pledges, given his selection as the party’s presidential candidate.

Particularly, with Kim Dong-myung, the head of the Korean Federation of Trade Unions, joining the Democratic Party’s Central Election Countermeasures Committee as the general director on the day of its launch, it is anticipated that these discussions will gain further momentum.

The Korean Federation of Trade Unions has been advocating for the legislation of extending the retirement age to 65.
