[Herald Economy reporters Kim Jin and Kim Hae-sol] Regarding the death of a Yangpyeong County official being investigated by the Special Prosecutor Min Joong-gi’s team over allegations related to Kim Geon-hee, the People’s Power Party has decided to put forth a party-driven bill on “violent investigation special prosecutor law.” They are highlighting the “coercive investigation” and “enticement” mentioned in the deceased official’s statement to question the legitimacy of the special prosecutor’s investigation and heighten their offensive.

On the morning of the 13th, the People’s Power Party held an emergency assembly and agreed to initiate the “Special Prosecutor’s Violent Investigation Special Law” as a party agenda for uncovering the truth of the recent death. The bill, initially introduced by party leadership, is currently being prepared by Assemblyman Joo Jin-woo of the National Assembly’s Legislative and Judiciary Committee, and is expected to be submitted as early as this week after final review by the leadership. Floor Leader Song Eon-seok stated, “We must investigate the violent investigations that utilized homicidal tactics by the special prosecutor,” adding, “The only way to investigate this is by conducting a special probe into the special prosecutor.”

Since the death occurred on the 10th, the People’s Power Party has consistently criticized the special prosecutor. Given the deceased’s written statement mentioning “tired of constant coercion and enticement,” they emphasize the need to confirm whether the investigation involved coercion.

Additional allegations of impropriety in the prosecutor’s investigation were raised during the assembly. Floor Leader Song pointed out, “There was a nearly 15-hour marathon investigation of the deceased,” and questioned, “The investigation procedures stipulate that night investigations after 9 PM require consent. Even with consent, inquiries should not continue past midnight. Did the special prosecutor receive consent for the nighttime investigation, and can they confirm and disclose the consent forms? Is it not a violation of the investigative procedures to have continued past midnight?” Kim Seon-kyo, a representative with a constituency in Yangpyeong, claimed, “It’s a murderous and fabricated prosecution. They set a target and proceeded with the investigation,” further alleging, “I understand they found nothing even after investigating the Seoul-Yangpyeong highway and so turned to the Gongheung district apartment.”

Most of the People’s Power Party lawmakers, including the leadership, entered the assembly wearing black suits and ties to express condolences for the deceased official. Placards reading “Dissolve the Fabricated Investigation Special Prosecutor” and “Immediately Dissolve the Homicidal Special Prosecutor” were displayed throughout the assembly.

Initially, the People’s Power Party planned to set up a memorial altar at the main gate of the National Assembly to mourn the deceased official and conduct group condolences. Preparations for the memorial began on the 12th, but the National Assembly Secretariat did not permit the installation, arguing that the incident does not constitute a societal disaster like the previous Sewol or Itaewon tragedies. In response, Party Secretary-General Jeong Hee-yong stated, “As this is a disaster created by the state, it is appropriate to install a memorial in the National Assembly,” openly demanding National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik and National Assembly Secretary-General Kim Min-ki allow the setup of the memorial.
