Choo Kyung-ho: “Lee Jae-myung’s first trial should be broadcast live… Transparent disclosure aligns with public interest.”

On the 5th, Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the People Power Party, stated, “For the public’s right to know, the first trial verdict of Democratic Party’s leader Lee Jae-myung should be broadcast live on TV,” during a meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul.

Choo urged that Lee boldly request the live broadcasting of the first trial verdict announcement from the court.

The first trial sentencing for Lee’s alleged violation of the Public Official Election Act is scheduled for the 15th of this month, while the sentencing regarding his perjury coaching allegations is set for the 25th.

The People Power Party has already submitted a petition to the court requesting live coverage of these sentencing trials.

Previously, the Supreme Court revised its internal rules to allow for live broadcasting of the sentencing if the defendant consents, or if it serves the “public interest,” even without the defendant’s approval.

Choo emphasized, “If Lee does not consent to the live broadcast, the court should decide to proceed with it. Broadcasting the first trial verdict transparently through live coverage is in the public interest to prevent organized dissent against and non-compliance with the judgment.”

Regarding the Democratic Party’s stance on abolishing the financial investment income tax, Choo stated, “I will immediately engage in negotiations with the Democratic Party to quickly finalize the legislative process in the National Assembly.”

He added, “Furthermore, we will enhance policy and legislative efforts to boost asset formation for the public and invigorate corporate dynamism through capital market value enhancement. The Democratic Party should stop manipulating public welfare for political gain and join the bipartisan consultation body and the special pension reform committee to partake in the journey towards stabilizing public welfare.”
