Let’s talk to the weather team reporter Kim Min-joon. Reporter Kim, we should now refer to Typhoon Jongdari as a tropical low-pressure system, right?
What is the maximum wind speed weakened to now?
Usually, we consider a storm to have a wind speed of at least 17m/s, but as of 3 a.m. this morning, the tropical low-pressure system is at a wind speed of 15m/s.
So, it has weakened, but it’s not quite time to be completely relieved yet.
As you just saw, all warnings have been lifted, but heavy rain and strong wind warnings are still in effect throughout the country. Particularly, a heavy rain advisory has been issued from 4:20 a.m. centered around Taean, Dangjin, and Seosan in Chungcheongnam-do.
Also, a storm warning is in place along the coastal areas that were in the path of the typhoon in the South Sea and West Sea regions, and a typhoon and flood warning has been issued for Chungcheongnam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Jeollanam-do.
The expected time for the system to dissipate has also accelerated.
It’s fortunate, but caution still needs to be exercised, isn’t it?
As you mentioned, it’s currently forecasted that the tropical low-pressure system will pass through inland, likely dissipating completely through this morning and afternoon of the 21st.
However, it’s a bit early to be completely relieved because of the moisture left by the typhoon.
This moisture could bring about 80 to 100mm of rain across the country as it penetrates inland. Looking at the weather radar now, rain clouds are widespread in Jeollabuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, the capital region, and Gangwon-do.
While these rain clouds may dissipate, they could still bring about 20-30mm of rain per hour.
And we also need to be cautious of the wind. The rain clouds left by the typhoon could bring gusts of up to 20m/s, so even though the typhoon has disappeared, we still need to be wary of strong winds.
Lastly, this week up until Friday is a period known as the “spring tide,” when the sea level is at its highest during the year. So, coastal residents and fishermen need to be cautious during this time.
