An eight-panel folding screen from the Joseon Dynasty, known as ‘Chaekgado’ (Bookshelf Painting), has been put up for auction. Among the surviving works, this piece features the highest number of sections, 73, displaying 230 objects, making it a compositionally rich artwork. Its estimated value is between 300 million and 800 million KRW.
K-Auction, which will conduct the March auction on the 19th, unveiled today (the 7th) a total of 142 artworks, valued at approximately 10.9 billion KRW, including the ‘Chaekgado’.
Involving works from the modern and contemporary art sections, the auction will showcase pieces by prominent modern and contemporary Korean artists as well as popular contemporary artists from both Korea and abroad. Among them, Yoo Young-kuk’s 1991 work ‘Work’ is listed for 340 million to 800 million KRW, while Chun Kyung-ja’s 1974 piece ‘Woman’ starts at 400 million KRW.
The luxury section, featuring unique works by contemporary artists like Woo Kukwon, George Condo, Yoshitomo Nara, and Ayako Rokkaku, will also auction handbags, watches, and jewelry. Notably, a limited-edition handbag ‘Onthego BB’, a collaboration between Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and luxury brand Louis Vuitton, is listed with a starting bid of 0 KRW.
The exhibited works will be available for free viewing at the K-Auction exhibition space from the 8th to the 19th. Some of these pieces will also be on display at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong during Art Basel Hong Kong from the 25th to the 28th, and thus will be exhibited domestically only until the 17th.
