Special Exhibition of Yu Mook and Portrait Paintings of Independence Movement Activists at Deoksu Palace

In a place where traces of independence activists are vividly depicted through writings and drawings, the Cultural Heritage Administration, together with the National Trust for Cultural Heritage, announced that they will present a special exhibition titled ‘국봉(國奉)-나라를 받들어 열렬한 마음이 차오르다’ at Deoksugung’s Dondeokjeon from today (13th) until the 31st of this month.

This exhibition will showcase 21 items including writings, portraits, and the Taegukgi (Korean national flag) left by independence activists during their lifetime.

The writings and portraits to be revealed in this exhibition include ‘가운수성(마음을 가다듬고 성찰한다)’ left by Prince Ui in an inscription, as well as a portrait of Son Byeong-hee, one of the 33 national representatives who signed the Declaration of Independence during the March 1st Movement.

Prince Ui was the fifth son of King Gojong and was caught conspiring with anti-Japanese independence fighters in 1919 to escape to the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai.

Of the exhibition items, 12 were sponsored or donated through purchase by the online game company Riot Games.

The Cultural Heritage Administration explained the intention behind the exhibition planning as a “good example of private-public partnership in the field of national heritage,” stating that they hope it will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the values of independence movements and the spirit of love for the country.
