Cold winds with snow and rain… Air quality in central and Honam regions ‘poor’ due to fine dust

On the 25th, nationwide, the weather is expected to be mostly cloudy with rain or snow, accompanied by thunder and lightning, in most regions. The places experiencing rain and snow may also see gusty winds, and thunder and lightning, and some areas might even observe graupel (soft hail).

The rain that began on the west coast early in the morning is expected to spread across the country, excluding the east coast of Gangwon, by the morning and extend to the east coast of Gangwon by the afternoon, mostly stopping by late afternoon. In Gangwon, northern Chungbuk, eastern Jeonbuk, and northeastern mountainous areas of Gyeongbuk and northern east coast, rain may continue into the night.

Expected precipitation levels are 5–20mm in the Gangwon mountains and east coast, and in Ulleungdo and Dokdo, 5–15mm in the metropolitan area, inland Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Jeonbuk, 5–10mm in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, and Jeju, and around 5mm in Gyeongsang area.

In the northern high mountains of Gangwon (above 1000m altitude) and the mountains of Jeju, snow accumulation of 1–5cm is expected, and approximately 1cm in the mid and southern Gangwon and eastern high mountains of Jeonbuk.

Amid strong wind advisories on the mid-west and west coasts of Jeolla, strong winds with speeds over 20 m/s are expected. Southern coast areas of Jeollanam-do and Jeju may also face such winds gradually from the morning, potentially leading to strong wind advisories being issued. Winds exceeding 15 m/s are anticipated in most regions, warranting caution for facility management and safety accidents.

Regarding fine dust concentration levels: in the metropolitan area, inland Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Honam, the levels are expected to be ‘bad’, while other regions will remain at ‘normal’. In terms of ultrafine dust, the concentration levels in the metropolitan area, inland Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Honam will reach ‘very bad’, whereas Gangwon’s eastern region, Yeongnam, and Jeju will observe ‘bad’ levels. From late morning, the incoming clean northwesterly air will help reduce the dust concentration in most areas.

Daytime temperatures will range from 9 to 14 degrees, similar to the seasonal average.

As of 5:00 a.m., temperatures are as follows: Seoul 8.3°C, Incheon 8.9°C, Suwon 5.8°C, Chuncheon 1.8°C, Gangneung 9.7°C, Cheongju 8.1°C, Daejeon 8.0°C, Jeonju 7.9°C, Gwangju 10.2°C, Jeju 14.4°C, Daegu 4.5°C, Busan 11.4°C, Ulsan 7.6°C, and Changwon 9.2°C.

The sea wave heights are expected to range from 0.5 to 3.5 meters in the East Sea, 1.0 to 3.5 meters in the West Sea, and 0.5 to 3.0 meters in the South Sea. Offshore (approximately 200km from the coast) wave heights are predicted to reach 1.0 to 4.0 meters in the East and South Seas, and 1.5 to 4.5 meters in the West Sea.
