[Reporter Lee Bae-woon from E-Daily] BMW Korea demonstrated a significant performance with a 15.6% increase in cumulative sales of electrified vehicles compared to the previous year.
On the 13th, BMW Korea announced that from January to October this year, it sold a total of 9,454 electrified vehicles, marking a 15.6% increase compared to the same period last year. During this period, pure electric vehicles (BEV) accounted for 4,814 units, and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) for 4,640 units. Notably, PHEV sales surged by 70.7% from 2,719 units in the same period last year, driving the growth in electrified vehicles.
BMW Korea’s expansion of electrification is based on strengthening its product lineup and investing in charging infrastructure. Under the “Power of Choice” strategy, the company has established an electrified lineup with 13 models and 24 powertrain options, including the compact SAV iX1, the luxury sedan i7, and the high-performance XM.
The company is also expanding its charging infrastructure to enhance the convenience of electric vehicle operation. Starting in late 2022, BMW Korea has been installing public premium charging stations, the “BMW Charging Station,” at key locations. In 2023, it launched a mid- to long-term project called “Charging Next.” So far, 2,800 chargers have been installed, with plans to expand to 3,000 by the end of the year.
Efforts are also being made to improve the quality of the charging environment. Earlier this year, BMW opened the first “BMW Charging Hub Lounge” near Seoul Station, offering a combined experience of charging and relaxation. By the end of the year, it plans to unveil an environmentally-friendly concept “ESG Charging Station.”
BMW Korea is also investing in technology to ensure the safety of electric vehicles. The company operates the “BMW Proactive Care” service, which utilizes connected technology for proactive vehicle management, detecting battery overcharging and overheating in real-time. A BMW Korea representative emphasized that it is the only importer involved in a pilot project to establish a fire reporting system upon detecting battery anomalies, contributing to securing the golden time in the event of a fire.
