6.3cm of snow in Cheorwon, Gangwon… Gangwon Province Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters activated phase 1

Access to 52 National Parks Restricted…Emergency Duty and Snow Removal Operations Deployed

(Chuncheon=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Sang-hak – In anticipation of heavy snowfall during the temporary public holiday on the 27th, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (hereinafter referred to as Gangwon-do) has activated the first stage of the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 8 PM on the 26th until 8 AM today, the snowfall amounts were recorded as 6.3 cm in Imnam, Cheorwon; 5.9 cm in Hwacheon; 4.8 cm in Nuksan, Chuncheon; 4.7 cm in Bongpyeong, Pyeongchang; 4.4 cm in Seoseok, Hongcheon; 4.3 cm in Sinrim, Wonju; 3.7 cm in Sinnam, Inje; 3.6 cm in Yanggu; 2.5 cm in Bukpyeong, Jeongseon; 1.8 cm in Cheongil, Hoengseong; and 1.1 cm in Sangdong, Yeongwol.

In the mountainous areas, the snowfall was recorded as 4.8 cm in Hyangnobong, 3 cm in Misiryeong, and 2.8 cm in Jinburyeong.

Although the snow accumulation is not yet significant, the Meteorological Administration has forecasted heavy snowfall of up to 30 cm by the 28th.

The expected snowfall is 10-20 cm in inland and mountainous areas, with some places receiving more than 30 cm. Along the east coast, 1-5 cm of snow is predicted.

Additionally, the expected precipitation for inland and mountainous regions is 5-30 mm, with around 5 mm for the east coast.

In response, Gangwon-do and its cities and counties are deploying 758 pieces of equipment, 766 personnel, and 3,422 tons of snow removal materials for snow removal operations.

Access to 52 entrances of national parks, including Seoraksan, Chiaksan, and Taebaeksan, has been restricted.

There have been no reported damages in Gangwon-do so far.

A Gangwon-do official advised, “With heavy snowfall accumulating and causing icy roads and road frost, please exercise special caution when traveling.”
