In celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Singapore this year, a variety of cultural exchange events are planned. Among these, the first performance of ‘Jongmyo Jeryeak’ will be held at Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre from April 4-5. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in collaboration with the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange, the Korean Embassy in Singapore, and the National Gugak Center, the event marks the first invitation for ‘Jongmyo Jeryeak’ to the theatre’s ‘A Tapestry of Sacred Music’ festival. Accompanying activities include a photo exhibition on Korean traditional music, a digital experience center to hear traditional instruments, trying on performance costumes, and taking commemorative photos.
Prior to the performance, on the evening of April 4, a celebration recognizing the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties will occur with notable attendees including Singapore’s Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng, Chief Executive of the National Heritage Board Chang Hwee Nee, and Korean Ambassador to Singapore Hong Jin-wook.
Cultural exchange events between Korea and Singapore will continue throughout the year, including a jazz performance by young artists from both countries in July, a lantern display at Gardens by the Bay in September, participation in the Asian Children’s Content Festival in May, a collaboration between pianist Baek Gun-woo and the Singapore Orchestra in October, and the performance of the play ‘Cherry Orchard’ in November. Sadly, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yoo In-chon had to cancel his planned visit due to the earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand.
The collaborations, starting with establishing diplomatic relations in 1975 and subsequent agreements and center setups, have continued to enhance friendly relations in the cultural sector between Korea and Singapore. This year’s events aim to further invigorate cultural and personal exchanges, serving as a bridge for future cooperation. Kim Hyun-jun, Director of International Cultural Policy at the Ministry, expressed hopes that these anniversary celebrations will strengthen both nations’ exchanges and foster the development of friendly relations.
