On the 5th, Ock Joo-hyun commented, “Smoking is difficult. I will work hard on my research so as not to disappoint my mentors,” adding, “Always a laughter-filled Mata Hari team. One body with the vitamin fumigator. Smoking acting is harder than belly dancing,” expressing her struggle.
In the accompanying video, Ock Joo-hyun is seen practicing a smoking scene from the musical ‘Mata Hari’ using a vitamin stick. Even though she is energetically learning from a fellow actor, her lack of smoking experience makes her appear somewhat awkward.
However, Ock Joo-hyun showed persistence by practicing repeatedly to achieve a more natural performance. She is set to play the role of Mata Hari in the musical, which begins on December 5th, and has been diligently preparing for this challenging role, including practicing the belly dance scenes.
Some internet users criticized the video of Ock Joo-hyun practicing “smoking” in public. Although it was a vitamin stick, criticisms focused on the inappropriateness of a public figure practicing smoking publicly—and potentially being mistaken for real smoking—especially on a social media platform accessible to minors.
On the other hand, other users argued, “This discomfort is overblown,” “It doesn’t seem to significantly influence minors,” and “It’s merely passionate practice for acting,” expressing confusion over the criticisms Ock Joo-hyun is facing.
