Choi Minhwan, a former member of the band FT Island, has been embroiled in a prostitution scandal. In response, a current lawyer has shared their thoughts on the situation.
On the YTN News FM program ‘Wise Radio Life’, which aired on the 30th, lawyer Lee Go-eun appeared and discussed the recent prostitution allegations against Choi Minhwan. Lee commented on a recording released by Minhwan’s ex-wife Yulhee, noting that it is important to pay attention to the reservations being made for motels and hotels. Lee questioned whether asking to book establishments instead of spending time with family is morally appropriate, highlighting that hospitality establishments legally employ hostesses without it being considered illegal. For prostitution to apply legally, however, there must be an exchange of money for sexual acts, which often occurs in such lodging establishments.
The lawyer further expressed strong suspicions of prostitution, highlighting a Telegram message concerning substantial amounts of money, which exceed typical entertainment costs. Despite this, Lee indicated that it’s difficult to establish direct evidence of solicitation through recordings alone. Without provisions for an attempt offense, visiting a lodging establishment alone wouldn’t qualify for attempted solicitation punishment, making direct evidence necessary.
Lee also observed that Minhwan seems very familiar with this nightlife culture, based on the language and reservations processes in the audio, suggesting extensive experience. Therefore, even if it’s his first offense, it’s unlikely he’d receive a suspended indictment and more likely face a fine or more severe punishment.
Choi Minhwan and Yulhee got married in 2018 and had one son and two daughters before announcing their divorce in December last year, with Minhwan gaining custody. Yulhee recently revealed the reasons for their divorce on her YouTube channel, citing Minhwan’s interactions with entertainment establishment staff and requesting women to be called and hotels booked, describing the shock and clarity she experienced upon discovering these visits.
Following these revelations, Minhwan stepped down from his role on KBS 2TV’s variety program ‘The Return of Superman’ and suspended his activities. Consequently, FT Island continues as a two-member unit, with a session musician temporarily replacing Minhwan’s drum position.
