Hyundai Steel unveils first model of an electric arc furnace plant in the US.

Hyundai Steel will unveil a model of its planned electric arc furnace steel plant in Louisiana, USA, for the first time. From December 4th to 7th, at the ‘World Hydrogen Expo (WHE) 2025’ held at KINTEX in Ilsan, Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, Hyundai Steel will showcase the model of the U.S. electric arc furnace steel plant, which is expected to commence commercial production in 2029, along with its long-term technology roadmap leading to hydrogen reduction steelmaking.

Visitors will be able to get an overview of the plant’s major processes and nearby infrastructure, including the Direct Reduction Plant (DRP) for producing direct reduced iron (DRI), the electric furnace, and the hot and cold rolling facilities. An exhibition video will also be available to help understand the carbon reduction process, illustrating the gradual transition to hydrogen reduction steelmaking by increasing the hydrogen usage rate through the direct reduction process, which uses natural gas as a reducing agent.

Additionally, the expo will offer insights into Hyundai Steel’s future core process technologies and equipment roadmap, its long-term vision for achieving net-zero emissions, and future value. It serves as a platform to understand Hyundai Steel’s carbon-neutral strategy.

Hyundai Steel stated, “Through this World Hydrogen Expo, we aim to showcase Hyundai Steel’s future vision and technological capabilities on the global stage and actively demonstrate our role in contributing to the carbon-neutral strategy as a part of the Hyundai Motor Group.”

Meanwhile, WHE 2025 is a global hydrogen industry event where companies from around the world participate to share the latest technologies and industry trends and explore cooperation opportunities.
