Donghae City is investing 350 million won this year in a project to establish a mid- to long-term smart city plan (2026-2030) as part of its efforts to transform into a “smart city.”
The city plans to hold a proposal evaluation committee in February, start construction in March, conduct a mid-term report in July, and complete the project by the end of December.
A smart city integrates information and communication technology (ICT) to solve various urban problems, improve citizens’ quality of life, and build a sustainable city.
Through the project, the city aims to present a smart city vision and mid- to long-term roadmap based on an analysis of regional status and conditions. It will focus on identifying region-specific smart services suitable for Donghae City and on building a city model based on advanced technologies to address major urban issues in areas such as transportation, energy, environment, and safety. Additionally, efforts will be made to harmonize with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport’s 4th Comprehensive Smart City Plan and Donghae City’s 2040 Urban Basic Plan. The city seeks to transition into a future-oriented smart city that reflects both national policies and regional characteristics.
Once the smart city plan is established, the city expects not only to solve simple urban problems but also to boost the local economy, create jobs, and provide a safer and more pleasant living environment for its citizens by strengthening collaboration among citizens, businesses, and public institutions, evolving into a sustainable future city.
Meanwhile, the city has recently implemented citizen-focused smart city projects such as smart villages, digital towns, smart crosswalks, and smart urban regeneration in line with the digital transformation.
In relation to this, Donghae City Safety Officer Chae Si-byeong stated, “Careful consideration is needed in establishing this five-year plan to create a smart city that citizens can experience and empathize with,” adding that they will actively communicate to develop the plan through expert consultations and discussions with related organizations.
