Delivery app negotiations failed, with an additional meeting scheduled for the 7th… Coupang did not submit a ‘differential commission’ proposal.

The co-prosperity council, which discusses measures to alleviate the commission burden on delivery platforms and partner stores, held its final meeting but was unable to reach an agreement, so it decided to hold additional meetings.

The Delivery Platform-Partner Store Co-prosperity Council held its 10th meeting today (4th) at 2:30 PM at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul.

In this meeting, discussions continued with the delivery app side regarding ways to reduce commission burdens.

Coupang Eats proposed introducing a ‘differential commission rate’ for the first time.

Yoo Sung-hoon, the head of Coupang Eats, stated during his opening remarks, “Coupang aims to introduce a differential commission rate to lower the commission burden on small and micro shops while maintaining consumer benefits of free delivery, and we plan to submit additional co-prosperity measures.”

However, they did not submit any specific proposals. A representative of the co-prosperity council mentioned that Coupang’s side has expressed they could not submit a proposal because the differential commission is still under review and not yet finalized.

It was reported that Baemin (Baedal Minjok) proposed an amendment to lower the highest commission rate in their previously suggested differential commission rate plan and apply the differential approach to delivery fees as well.

Both Baemin and Coupang Eats stated they would review more forward-looking co-prosperity plans based on their previously proposed content.

However, it was reported that they still couldn’t narrow the differences with partner stores regarding the specific commission rates.

Thus, the council has decided to hold an additional meeting on the 7th to continue discussions.

Public interest members are expected to propose a final mediation plan based on the discussions at the next meeting.
