The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) has launched a special inspection of 98 large excavation sites nationwide, prompted by recent sinkhole incidents in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas.
Today (23rd), the ministry is holding a meeting of the ‘Task Force for Improving Underground Safety Management Systems’ to examine the underground safety management status and response plans of local municipalities.
The meeting includes the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, representatives from 17 metropolitan municipalities, and the Korean Geotechnical Society.
During the meeting, municipalities like Seoul, Busan, and Gwangju will share their current accident response statuses and special management plans for preventing ground subsidence.
The Korean Geotechnical Society plans to explain the research contract details for improving underground safety management regulations and request cooperation from the local governments.
Following the sinkhole incidents in Myeongil-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, and Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do, the government is operating an accident investigation committee. They plan to announce the cause analysis results and measures to strengthen safety management at excavation sites by June.
