Yonsei University may transfer its early essay admissions quota to regular admissions…”Decision to be made after appeal”

Yonsei University is considering transferring the admission slots for the problematic essay examination to the regular admissions process amid controversies over leaked questions. Following the injunction by the Seoul Western District Court’s Civil Division 21 to suspend the validity of the essay tests for the natural sciences section, Yonsei filed an objection and requested a prompt court date for resolution.

Yonsei University indicated that the decision on whether to transfer the test slots to the regular admissions process would be made after the appellate court’s decision. They also requested that the court allow them to receive a decision before December 13, the announcement date for successful applicants.

In an injunction lawsuit, the applicant can immediately appeal if their application is dismissed. The respondent, in this case, Yonsei University, can file an objection and then appeal if the objection is not accepted. This indicates that Yonsei University’s objection filing is a preliminary step toward a potential future appeal.

Attorney Kim Jung-sun, representing the applicants who filed the injunction, disclosed Yonsei’s request for a speedy court date. Kim argued that Yonsei’s actions reveal an intention to delay resolving the matter and emphasized the need for a prompt re-examination.

The court had previously accepted the students’ request to suspend the validity of the essay exams due to the leak but indicated that alternatives to a re-examination could be considered, respecting the university’s autonomy. On the day of the decision, Yonsei submitted an objection and requested an expedited court date.
