At Jeungsimsa Temple, the representative temple of Gwangju’s Mt. Mudeungsan, a fire broke out in the dining building and dormitory, which was extinguished after about 5 and a half hours.

According to the Gwangju Fire Department, a fire broke out in the dining building (service hall) at Jeungsimsa Temple on Mt. Mudeungsan in Dong-gu, Gwangju, around 9:51 a.m. on the 29th.

The fire department issued a level 1 fire response, and by 12:45 p.m., about 3 hours after receiving the report, the main fire was extinguished.

It took an additional 2 hours and 30 minutes to extinguish the remaining embers in the building debris, completing the full extinguishment of the fire around 3:15 p.m., approximately 5 and a half hours after the fire started.

Although there were no casualties, the dining building and dormitory building, totaling 2 structures, were completely destroyed by the fire.

Jeungsimsa Temple, the representative temple of Mt. Mudeungsan, is a designated cultural property of Gwangju City, and fortunately, the main cultural properties such as the national treasure No. 131, the Statue of the Medicine Buddha, were not damaged as they were at a distance from where the fire occurred.

The fire department plans to investigate the precise cause of the fire as soon as the cleanup of the debris in the dining building at Jeungsimsa Temple is completed, suspecting that the fire was caused by sparks from welding work on the sandwich panels of the dining building.
