The People Power Party has stated, “Stop the unprecedented rush for candidate Ma,” in response to the Constitutional Court’s delay in ruling on whether it is unconstitutional for Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok not to appoint constitutional judge candidate Ma Eun-hyeok.
In a statement released under the name of Kim Dae-sik, the party’s senior spokesperson for parliamentary affairs, the People Power Party said, “The Constitutional Court seems to be focusing uniquely on the power dispute regarding the appointment of Ma instead of addressing nine impeachment cases and the constitutional dispute on the quorum for Han Deok-soo’s impeachment, which raises doubts about its intentions and fairness.” The party added, “The court has many significant decisions to make, including a majority of impeachment trials and power disputes.”
The People Power Party further stated, “There are past precedents from the Constitutional Court that individual lawmakers cannot represent the National Assembly to file a power dispute petition. If the court does not respect its own precedents, it will be difficult for the public to trust its judgments.” The party called for the court to make efforts to restore its fairness and trust.
Spokesperson Shin Dong-wook also commented, “Today’s abrupt ‘delay in ruling’ by the Constitutional Court could be seen as admitting to its own ‘procedural flaws.’ The court should first expeditiously review and dismiss the impeachment motion for Prime Minister Han and should reject the ‘non-appointment of Ma Eun-hyeok’ power dispute case due to ‘significant procedural violations.'”
