“The Alliance Between the Unification Church and the Democratic Party: Why Is There No Investigation?”
On the 27th, the People’s Power party criticized the joint investigative unit of prosecutors and police investigating the “Shinchonji party member allegation” for conducting a search and seizure at their headquarters, calling it “opposition party repression and dictatorship.”
Park Sung-hoon, the chief spokesperson, released a statement shortly after the news of the raid, claiming that “the search and seizure is a reckless attempt to distract from the Democratic Party’s forced passage of the ‘Judicial Destruction Three Laws’ and to sway public opinion, which everyone is aware of.” He continued, “Only the People’s Power party is subjected to such intense searches and investigations, which is nothing but a targeted investigation meant to strangle the main opposition party.”
Park further questioned, “Why is there no investigation into Democratic Party leader Kim Eo-jun’s statement that 100,000 Shinchonji members intervened in the Democratic presidential primary?” He added, “There is already concrete testimony regarding the alleged connection between the Unification Church and the Democratic Party.”
Continuing, he warned, “The investigative agencies that serve as shields for the authorities while wielding blades against the opposition must pay the price,” asserting that “using the law as a tool to suppress opponents is not governance but oppression and dictatorship.”
At a press conference held in the National Assembly, Song Eon-seok, the floor leader, stated, “Following the special prosecution, now the joint investigation unit intends to seize the People’s Power party member list.” He added, “The special prosecution and the prosecution, which are the regime’s puppet dogs, are aiming to stab the heart of the opposition. Repression of the opposition and its annihilation is dictatorship.”
Following the news of the search and seizure, Song gathered lawmakers at the party headquarters, while some members, including leader Jang Dong-hyuk, remained at the plenary session for an ongoing unlimited debate.
