The National Fire Agency Conducts Emergency Safety Inspections at Over 5,000 Lodging Facilities in Seoul Ahead of BTS Concert

Over the past weekend, following a fire at a lodging facility in Sogong-dong, Seoul, the government launched an emergency fire safety inspection of lodging facilities in the city. The Fire Department announced that starting today (the 16th), they will conduct an urgent safety inspection of 5,481 lodging facilities in the Seoul area over four days to assess fire risk factors and strengthen safety management.

This inspection was initiated after Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung was briefed on the lodging facility fire by the Fire Department and instructed that an inspection should be conducted due to an anticipated surge in both domestic and international visitors ahead of a large-scale K-pop concert.

The inspection targets include 4,904 urban guesthouses for foreign tourists, 381 Hanok experience businesses, and 151 lodging facilities in the Jongno and Jung districts. There are also 45 lodging facilities with capsule-type sleeping accommodations similar to those involved in the recent fire.

The Fire Department plans to conduct on-site visits to urban guesthouses and Hanok experience businesses to check fire detectors and other firefighting facilities and provide fire safety education. Special fire inspections will be carried out for lodging facilities in Jongno and Jung districts, as well as capsule-type lodging facilities, anticipating a high number of visitors.

Based on the results of these special fire inspections, the Fire Department, in collaboration with related agencies such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, will analyze the issues and work on improving regulations.

The government also intends to strengthen safety management measures for fire response and crowd control on the day of the BTS concert.
