Lee Chang-soo, the head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office who oversaw the investigation into allegations of stock manipulation involving Kim Kun-hee, the wife of the impeached former President Yoon Seok-yeol, has reportedly expressed his intention to resign. This comes about two months after the Constitutional Court dismissed the National Assembly’s impeachment motion against the two prosecutors.
According to legal circles on the 20th, Lee expressed his resignation to the Ministry of Justice, citing health reasons. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Jo Sang-won also submitted his resignation simultaneously.
Last October, Lee and Jo led the investigation into the stock manipulation case involving Deutsche Motors and concluded with a decision of no charges against Kim Kun-hee. As a result, the National Assembly passed an impeachment motion in December last year, claiming inadequate investigation. However, in March, the Constitutional Court unanimously dismissed the motion.
After promptly returning to their duties, Lee and Jo decided last month to reopen the investigation into the allegations involving Kim. They even formed a dedicated team to proceed with the investigation. Lee is also directing the ongoing investigation into allegations of election interference by Myeong Tae-gyun at the Central District Prosecutors’ Office.
The acceptance of resignation letters from Lee and Jo will be determined by the Ministry of Justice.
