The police have launched the Integrated Response Center for Telecommunications and Financial Fraud and established a unified response system to combat voice phishing crimes.
Today (15th), the National Police Agency held an opening ceremony for the Integrated Response Center at the KT Gwanghwamun Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
The newly launched center includes personnel not only from the National Police Agency but also seconded staff from the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Science and ICT to serve as a hub for intergovernmental cooperation.
The center is composed of a Reporting Response Center, an Analysis and Investigation Team, and a Policy Cooperation Team to establish a response system that connects consultation, analysis, blocking, investigation, and policy implementation against voice phishing.
The Reporting Response Center will operate 24/7, handling professional consultations on voice phishing reports and tips received via 112, and integrating preventive measures such as account payment suspensions and blocking of small payments.
The Analysis and Investigation Team will analyze the reported data to halt phone number usage and prevent additional damage, while the Policy Cooperation Team will build a collaborative system with personnel dispatched from various agencies and work on legal and institutional improvements alongside international cooperation projects.
The National Police Agency stated, “There were limitations with the existing faculty-focused police Integrated Reporting Response Center,” and emphasized the need for fundamental measures to prevent crimes.
They also noted that “recently, evidence is emerging of Koreans being detained by crime organizations related to voice phishing in Cambodia,” and expressed plans to strengthen responses to new types of fraud, such as voice phishing and investment leading rooms perpetrated by Southeast Asian crime organizations, centered around the Integrated Response Center.
