(Daegu = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi Su-ho = The Cybercrime Investigation Unit of the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 14th that they have booked a man in his 40s, identified as Mr. A, without detention on charges of violating the National Sports Promotion Act. He is accused of illegally purchasing approximately 1,000 professional baseball game tickets using a macro program and reselling them at a higher price, thus making an unfair profit of about 40 million KRW.
According to the police, Mr. A used a macro program from March to September of last year to purchase a total of 1,168 tickets for Samsung Lions exhibition games and regular season professional baseball games at prices ranging from 8,000 to 50,000 KRW each. He then resold these tickets at a higher price on online ticket trading sites, allegedly making about 43 million KRW.
It was found that Mr. A used not only his account but also accounts of his family members to commit the crime, and he resold the tickets purchased with the help of the macro program at prices up to 700% higher than the original.
The National Sports Promotion Act prohibits unauthorized ticket sales using macro programs designed to repeatedly perform specified tasks to secure a large number of tickets in a short period. Violation of this law can result in imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million KRW.
The Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency stated, “The act of reselling tickets using a macro program is an illegal act that infringes on fair ticket purchasing opportunities,” and urged the public to actively report any scalping activities found online.
