Chinese fishing vessel capsizes in international waters of the West Sea… 2 Chinese nationals dead, 3 missing

On the morning of the 9th, about 81km off Gageodo in Sinan County, Jeollanam-do, a 98-ton Chinese fishing vessel capsized in the international waters of the West Sea, leading to the rescue of eight crew members, two of whom were found in cardiac arrest. Three crew members are still missing, and the coast guard is continuing the search.

According to Mokpo Coast Guard, the capsizing was reported at approximately 6:50 a.m. The Chinese vessel had 11 crew members on board. Another Chinese fishing vessel operating nearby noticed the capsizing and reported it. Six crew members were initially rescued by the nearby Chinese vessel, and an additional two were later rescued by the coast guard upon their arrival.

The rescue effort involved two coast guard patrol ships, three aircraft, and the West Sea Special Rescue Team. Additionally, one navy vessel and two Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries ships were deployed, along with one ship from the Chinese coast guard.

The six crew members first rescued were in good health, but the two rescued later by the coast guard were found in cardiac arrest. The whereabouts of the remaining three crew members are still unknown.

The coast guard found no signs of external collision on the vessel. They are coordinating with the Chinese authorities to transfer the deceased and rescued crew members while continuing the search for the missing.
