“8 tons of additional trash per day” Hannam-dong suffers from protests… Seoul city to support waste management

On the 5th, protesters in favor of impeachment were seen covering themselves with foil or wearing raincoats near the Presidential Residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it would deploy garbage disposal vehicles and personnel and provide financial support to the Yongsan-gu area, including Hannam-dong, which is suffering from trash due to prolonged large-scale protests.

According to the city on the 9th, the daily garbage collection in Yongsan-gu increased by about 8 tons, from an average of 593 tons to 601 tons, after the large-scale protests. In response, the city plans to deploy available resources accordingly, including 334 cleaning staff and 58 pieces of equipment from Yongsan-gu.

The city will also provide funding to deploy a cleanliness task force of 10 people during non-working hours of environmental officers, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Furthermore, it plans to support garbage disposal costs for other districts like Jongno-gu, where large-scale protests occur.

To alleviate the burden on districts where waste continues to increase due to prolonged protests, the city is also considering easing the ‘household waste import management system.’ This system assigns waste reduction targets to each district and provides incentives or penalties based on goal achievement.

A city official stated, “As large-scale protests are expected to continue, we will ensure rapid processing through on-site inspections to prevent residents from experiencing inconvenience and distress.”
