Zelensky Visits Turkey, “Europe Should Be Included in Peace Talks”

President Erdogan: “Tri-party negotiations among the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine to be hosted by Türkiye”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Türkiye. Zelensky emphasized the importance of including Europe in Ukraine’s peace negotiations.

According to Reuters, after a three-hour summit held in Ankara, Zelensky stated, “We are part of Europe,” highlighting that Europe includes the EU, Türkiye, and the UK. He further insisted that Europe, alongside the U.S., must be involved in security guarantees discussions, cautioning against a negotiation process skewed towards Russia.

In response, President Erdogan agreed with Zelensky’s stance and stated, “The U.S. and Russia must not compromise Ukraine’s territorial integrity or sovereignty. The U.S. is hastily pushing for peace talks.”

Türkiye has positioned itself as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict. In March 2022, shortly after the war began, Türkiye mediated negotiations involving the foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine. President Erdogan expressed that Türkiye would be the ideal location for the tri-party talks among Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S. in the near future.
