Wildfire on Crete, Greece: 5,000 Residents and Tourists Evacuated [World at this Hour]

[News Today]

A wildfire on the island of Crete, a popular tourist destination in Greece, has spread, forcing the emergency evacuation of 5,000 residents and tourists.

The fire originated in the forest area of Ierapetra in the southeastern part of Crete and rapidly spread due to strong winds. As the flames approached nearby homes and hotels, authorities issued an emergency evacuation order.

Evacuees were moved to temporary shelters or nearby hotels, while some residents were rescued via ships from the beach due to blocked evacuation routes.

Authorities have stated that all tourists are safe and that there are no serious injuries.

However, some residents received treatment for breathing difficulties, and hospitals across the island of Crete have been put on emergency standby.

Despite the efforts of 230 firefighters, helicopters, and 46 fire trucks, extinguishing the fire has been challenging due to strong winds exceeding 20 meters per second.
