“Tsunami advisory remains in effect for half of Japan… ‘Avoid approaching coastal areas.'”

Due to the aftermath of a strong earthquake that occurred yesterday on the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, a tsunami advisory issued for the Pacific coast of Japan remains in effect even today (31st), a full day later.

Japan is currently maintaining the tsunami advisory across the Hokkaido and Honshu Chiba Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued advisories for most parts of the Pacific coast at 8:37 AM yesterday, and about an hour later, it upgraded the advisory to a higher-level tsunami warning for more than half of the regions.

Later last night, the warning was downgraded to an advisory, and then in some areas, the advisory was lifted altogether.

However, about half of the Pacific coastal area of the Japanese archipelago still has the advisory in place.

The Japan Meteorological Agency commented, “Since tsunamis are still being observed in some regions, people in areas with advisories should refrain from entering the sea or approaching the coast,” and regarding the time to lift the advisory, they mentioned, “We will decide in the evening today.”

Damage from the tsunami is also being confirmed.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated at a press conference today, “Reports have been received of damage to oyster farming facilities in Miyagi Prefecture,” mentioning fatal incidents such as a woman in her 50s who died in a car accident while trying to evacuate, along with reports of one seriously injured person and six slightly injured individuals, who were hurt during the evacuation process through various accidents.

Yesterday, Japan issued evacuation orders for over 2 million people, primarily focusing on residents along the coast, following the tsunami warning and advisory.
