Trump Expands Military Deployment in Major U.S. Cities, Including Portland
The U.S. government under President Donald Trump is extending the deployment of military forces in major cities to crack down on illegal immigrants and crime, with a recent announcement to allow “full force” if necessary. This move has sparked backlash, particularly in Oregon and Portland, where officials argue there is no national security threat.
Trump’s directive follows a recent shooting incident at an ICE detention facility in Dallas, which resulted in casualties and anti-ICE sentiments. In response, Trump declared that all necessary forces would be used to protect ICE facilities in Portland and counter domestic terrorist threats such as Antifa.
The deployment to Portland marks the fourth such initiative after Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Memphis. This expansion has drawn criticism from Portland’s local government, which claims no additional forces are needed. Mayor Keith Wilson stated that “the necessity for forces in Portland or any U.S. city is zero,” while Oregon Governor Tina Kotek declared Portland safe and requested Trump refrain from sending troops.
This situation is the latest in a series of heightened tensions surrounding Trump’s immigration policies, especially after the Dallas incident, and reflects ongoing national debates about law enforcement and civil unrest in the U.S.
